Lakers at Nuggets: The Preview April 8, 2007

Boys and girls, it’s getting down to the wire and it is getting exciting. With the Lakers losing to the Suns, the Nuggets are now the sixth seed in the Western Conference. The question is, how long will they hold that spot? The Lakers come into Denver tonight looking to get the sixth seed back. A Laker win will do just that. Of course that won’t be easy, the Nuggets have had the Lakers’ number as of late. The Lakers haven’t beaten the Nuggets since their victory back on January 5th. Last Tuesday’s Nuggets victory over the Lakers showed just what the Nuggets can do, even if they are facing Kobe Bryant. Tonight’s game should be no different for ‘Melo, A.I. and the rest of the boys in blue.
Denver is on a tear, winning their last five games. That is impressive enough in itself, but the Nuggets are winning games doing something they haven’t done all season. They’re playing defense. Starting with a 75-71 victory over the Mavericks, Denver continued to show their defensive prowess by holding the Clippers under 100 points in a 96-93 victory Saturday night. It’s like the Super Bowl champions, the Indianapolis Colts. Going into the playoffs, their defense was horrible, then, all of a sudden, they learned how to play some “D” and the rest is history. If the Nuggets can keep it up, the rest might be history for them too.
Kobe Bryant is one of the best, if not the best, player in the NBA. Unfortunately, he was matched up against another star, Steve Nash. The outcome was a Lakers loss at the worst time. With a handful of teams battling for the final three spots in the Western Conference playoffs, the Lakers are dangerously close to sitting this post-season out. After tonight’s game, the Lakers will be looking forward to meetings against the Clippers, Suns and Spurs. Good news for Lakers fans though, of the teams battling for the final spots, no one has an easy schedule. That might be all that saves Kobe Bryant and friends.
There is nothing like fighting for your playoff lives and control your own destiny and that is exactly how this race is shaping up. As NBA fans, all we need to do is sit back, grab a cold one, and enjoy.

Happy Easter to all who celebrate and good day to all who don’t. This Easter Sunday, I awoke to gloomy weather and a slight trickle of rain. For once, I was glad I wasn’t a little kid out looking for colored eggs and delicious candy. In honor of the Easter holiday, I thought it would be prudent to take a peek in on some of our favorite sports figures and see how they are celebrating the holiday.
Kurt Warner is spending this Easter Sunday as he spends all others, no, not looking for employment, he’s helping his local church set up the annual Easter egg hunt.
This Easter, Michael Jordan is spending his time helping local inner city youth by reading them Easter stories and hiding candy-filled eggs under parked cars, dumpsters and homeless people.
Ricky Williams is spending this Easter getting his NFL reinstatement papers together. In the spirit of the holiday, he is also attempting to roll that green plastic Easter grass to see if he can get high on a substance not banned by the NFL. Oh Ricky!
Eagles coach Andy Reid is celebrating Easter by shoveling down Peeps and Cadbury Creme Eggs at a feverish pace. Of course, this is no different from any other day.
The Suns’ Steve Nash is celebrating Easter by doing what he does best, clubbing baby seals.
Daisuke Matsuzaka, or Dice-K as lazy white people like to call him, is spending Easter at the Red Sox’s annual Easter celebration. Dice-K, after spotting the giant bunny, thinks Soxs catcher Jason Varitek might have slipped some GHB in his sake because he is clearly tripping.
David Bechham and wife “Posh Spice” are spending Easter coming to the sad realization that, contrary to what they’d been told, American soccer is not nearly as popular as American Idol.
Lions GM, Matt Millen, is spending this Sunday scouting for the upcoming draft. He says he’s limited the Lions’ options down to three candidates; wide receiver Calvin Johnson, wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett and wide receiver Robert Meachem (that’s right, he can’t count).
Meanwhile, Detroit Lions owner Bill Ford is spending Easter with his head in the sand. He’s been stuck like this for the past four years.
Adam “Pac-Man” Jones is spending this Sunday as he spends most other Sundays, talking to police and waiting to post bail so he can go home.
Nick Saban, head football coach at Alabama, is spending this Easter still laughing over the fast one he pulled on the Miami Dolphins.
Former second overall selection in the 1998 NFL Draft, Ryan Leaf, is doing what he does best this Easter, failing to live up to his potential, as a short-order cook at Butch’s Diner.
Last but not least, star Ohio State tailback Maurice Clarett is spending this Easter drinking toilet wine and playing a game of dice with his good friends in cell block D. Only three more years Maurice, unless they make you serve the whole seven and a half. Bummer!
