Pure Gould: Bears beat Seahawks January 14, 2007

The Seattle Seahawks were on the cusp of doing the unthinkable. They had won the coin toss in overtime. They were driving the ball down the field. But the magic didn’t last. Their drive stalled and the Bears took over. Faced with a third and ten, the Bears did what a lot of teams have done, beat the Seahawks for a big pass play. It was a 30 yard pass from Rex Grossman to Rashied Davis that was the Seahawks downfall. There will be a lot of debate about who blew it on this one. Was it Michael Boulware? Was it one of the cornerbacks? Was it defensive coordinator John Marshal? It really doesn’t matter. The Seahawks are going home.
No one dominated this game. The Bears defense got beat at times. The Seahawks offense got beat at times. It was a good game, except for the ending. I really thought it would come down to Josh Brown kicking his fifth game-winning field goal of the season. That wasn’t the case. Robbie Gould is going to the Pro Bowl, and now I see why. His career long had been a 49-yard field goal. The one that beat the Seahawks was also a 49-yarder. If the Seattle defense would have held the Bears to one less yard, it might have been a different story. We’ll never know.
It is frustrating being a Seahawks fan. You have players like TE Jeremey Stevens that show up half the time, but never when he’s needed. You have players like QB Matt Hasselbeck and RB Shaun Alexander that can’t seem to play their best simultaneously. It’s either one or the other, never both playing well at the same time. You have a defense that can make big plays, but never when the game is on the line. You have a defensive scheme that nine times out of ten makes no sense. Maybe it is like that for every team. More often than not, the Seahawks are definately a prime example of this discontinuity.
It is a long offseason for the Seahawks. Some changes need to be made both on the coaching staff and on the Seahawks roster. I don’t want to see Mike Holmgren go, but maybe it is time.
It was a good run. Just not good enough. Until next year…
Seattle at Chicago: First half notes January 14, 2007

I get frustrated with Mike Holmgren’s conservative play calling at the end of first halves. You have two timeouts and you don’t use a single one. Sure, Matt Hasselbeck was sacked, but that didn’t mean there was no chance for you to get a field goal before the clock hit triple zeros. That aside, I do think the Seahawks are playing pretty well. Despite giving up that touchdown towards the end, the defense is getting to the ball. Mainly, they are tackling better than they have most of the season. All we need is another turnover and I think we could really turn this thing around. Speaking of turnovers, Julian Peterson is the man. He is playing harder than any other defensive player. Keep it up Peterson.
Thank goodness Shaun Alexander is finally starting to put things together! He had some good rushes the last couple times he touched the ball. Hopefully, that means our offensive line is getting some chemistry. I just hope that continues in the second half. As far as Hasselbeck goes, he still isn’t putting things together. He needs to step it up. If Darrell Jackson isn’t going to catch the ball then get him out of there. The pain may be too much for him.
The Bears look good. Their defense isn’t dominating like everyone might have thought. Clearly, this is good for the Seahawks. Rex Grossman, however, is playing better than I would have ever thought. Cedric Benson is a beast. He’s dragging Seattle defenders like they are middle schoolers (sometimes I think they might be).
The last half should be good. Stay tuned…
